Cookie Policy

The short version
This site uses a few first-party cookies and records how visitors use its pages, so we can see what people read, where they get stuck and which pages lead to a conversation. We built that ourselves, so no advertising network or analytics company is involved, and we never record what you type into a form.
On your first visit a notice at the bottom of the screen asks you to choose OK or No thanks. The site works the same either way, and you can change your answer any time with at the foot of every page.
Cookies and storage this site sets
bb_consent
Cookie
Remembers your answer to the cookie notice, OK or No thanks, so we do not ask on every page.
How long. 13 months from your answer, then the notice asks again.
bb_vid
Cookie, not readable by page scripts
A random identifier that lets us recognize a returning visitor across days. It holds no name, email or other detail about you.
How long. 13 months. Not set at all after No thanks, or when your browser sends Global Privacy Control. In the EU, the rest of the EEA, the UK and Switzerland it is set only after you click OK.
bb_s2
Session storage in your browser
Holds the current visit (a random visit number, the first page you opened, the site that sent you and any campaign tags on the link) so a form you send can say how you found us.
How long. Until you close the tab. A new visit starts after 30 minutes without activity.
bb-theme
Local storage in your browser
Your choice of light or dark mode, if you made one with the switch in the header.
How long. Until you clear it.
Only for Black Badger staff
Visitors never get these two. They are set only when someone at Black Badger signs in to the editor that runs this site.
bb_internal
Cookie
Marks the browser of someone at Black Badger who signed in to the site editor, so our own visits are not counted.
How long. 13 months.
sb-...-auth-token
Cookie, not readable by page scripts
Keeps a Black Badger editor signed in. Set by the sign-in page only.
How long. Until they sign out, or the session expires.
What gets recorded
Whatever you answer, our own analytics count
- the pages you view, how long you stay and how far down you scroll
- where on a page you click, and the words on the link or button you clicked
- on a computer with a mouse, where the pointer rests, counted into a coarse grid rather than traced
- on the contact form and the article offer, which fields you use and for how long, and whether the form was sent
- whether you booked a call through the scheduler
- your type of device, browser, operating system and screen size
- your approximate location (country, region and city), worked out from your IP address by our host
Without the visitor cookie, all of that is counted anonymously. Our server works out a short identifier from your IP address, your browser details and a secret only we hold, and changes it every day, so it cannot follow you from one day to the next or to any other site. Your IP address itself is not stored with any of it.
With the visitor cookie, the same things are recorded against its random identifier, so we can see that someone came back and what they looked at across visits.
What is never recorded
- anything you type into a form field, until you choose to send the form
- keystrokes, passwords or text you select
- anything on our editor pages
Session replays
With your OK, and only then, we may record a visit as a replay of the pages you saw, your scrolling, your pointer and your clicks, so we can see where the site gets in people's way. A replay masks every form field, never captures keystrokes, leaves out embedded content such as the booking calendar, and is deleted after 90 days.
When you send a form
Sending the contact form or asking for a resource in an article sends us what you typed, together with the page you sent it from and how you first found the site (the first page you opened, the site that sent you and any campaign tags). If you have the visitor cookie, your visits, earlier and later, are then linked to your name, email and company, so we can see which pages brought you to us. Without the cookie, the form is not linked to your visits. See our Privacy Policy for what happens next.
Saying no, or changing your mind
- Click No thanks on the notice. We set no visitor cookie, delete one we set earlier straight away, and count your visits anonymously as described above.
- Use at the foot of any page to change your answer. Clicking OK there after saying no, or after your browser sent Global Privacy Control, counts as your choice.
- Turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser. We treat it as No thanks and do not show the notice.
- Clear this site's cookies in your browser, which also resets your answer.
- To have what we recorded about you deleted, email info@blackbadger.biz.
How long we keep it
Page views, clicks and the other events above, and the analytics copy of sent forms, are deleted after 13 months. A visitor record goes 13 months after the last visit, and the name, email and company on it 13 months after the form that gave them. Replays go after 90 days. What you send through a form also lives in our own client system for as long as we need it to work with you.
Other companies involved
These companies process data for us to run the site. None of them receives our analytics for its own use.
- Vercel hosts the site. It sees your IP address to serve each page and tells us your approximate location.
- Supabase stores the site's data, including the analytics and what forms send.
- Calendly runs the scheduler on our contact page. It loads from Calendly's servers only once you answer the question in front of it, and sets its own cookies under Calendly's policies.
- Resend delivers the confirmation email you get after sending a form, and the notification we get.
- Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a form is sent by a person. It sees your IP address and browser details when you use a form.
